The True Devotee: Recognizing the Value of Righteousness and Scriptures

Introduction In the spiritual journey, sincerity and adherence to divine knowledge are crucial. One who rejects the truth even after witnessing it with their own eyes cannot be considered a true devotee. Such individuals, who act according to their own will rather than following the guidance of holy scriptures, are not just misguided—they are disconnected from their soul’s welfare.

A Warning Against Spiritual Arrogance

Kabir Sahib, the Supreme God, clearly declares:

Kabir, jaan boojh saachi tajai, karai jhooth se neh. Taaki sangat hey Prabhu! swapn mein bhi na deh.

Translation: One who knowingly rejects the truth and embraces falsehood is a sinful being. O Lord! Never let me associate with such a person—not even in a dream.

This couplet reveals that a person who ignores truth—even when it is evident—is devoid of virtue. Their actions reflect a disregard for true spiritual knowledge and a lack of concern for their soul's liberation.

The Consequences of Disregarding Truth

Aisa paapi prabhaat na bhento, mukh dekhein paap lagai jaaka. Nau-dash maas garbh traas daee, dhikkaar janm tis ki maa ka.

Translation: Do not meet such a sinner even in the morning. Merely seeing their face invites sin. Such a person caused pain to their mother during nine to ten months of pregnancy but lived a life so fruitless that even their mother’s suffering went in vain.

Kabir Sahib strongly condemns those who waste the human life by remaining entangled in ignorance. Not only do they harm themselves, but they also bring disgrace upon their birth and the pain their mother endured.

The Worth of a Meaningful Birth

Kabir, ya to mata bhakt janai, ya daata ya shoor. Ya fir rahai baanjhari, kyon vyarth ganvaavai noor.

Translation: Let a mother give birth to a true devotee, a generous donor, or a brave soul who stands for truth and righteousness. If she cannot bear such a child, it is better for her to remain childless rather than waste her divine energy raising an unworthy offspring.

A meaningful human birth is marked by spiritual consciousness, charity, or valor. A true devotee lives by scriptural evidence, discards false worship, and uplifts their life through truth. A donor practices righteousness and uplifts society. A warrior of truth stands firm against injustice and fights for dharma.

On the contrary, a person who refuses to recognize truth, brings no value to themselves or the world.

Conclusion: Aligning with the Scriptures is the Key to Liberation

True devotion begins with accepting scriptural knowledge and renouncing falsehood. A person who lives without such alignment is spiritually bankrupt. They not only lose the purpose of human life but become a burden to others.

As per the teachings of Kabir Sahib, let us strive to be:

  • Devotees guided by scriptures,
  • Charitable in actions,
  • Brave in standing for truth.

And let us avoid the company of those who knowingly reject truth—even in our dreams.
